It Was Made for the Dead. Then It Saved the Living.
Every morning, in bathrooms across America, people pour a capful of blue or green liquid, tip it back, and gargle for thirty seconds. It's automatic. It's routine. It's one of those things you do before you're even fully awake.

The story of commercial mouthwash begins not in a dental lab or a pharmaceutical company, but in a mortuary. It involves a surgeon with a theory about germs, a chemist who was trying to preserve human remains, and one of the most successful — and deliberately misleading — marketing campaigns in American history.
The Germ Theory Changed Everything
To understand how this all happened, you need to know what the medical world looked like in the 1860s and 1870s. Louis Pasteur had recently demonstrated that microorganisms caused disease. Joseph Lister, a British surgeon, had taken that idea and run with it — developing antiseptic techniques for surgical wards that dramatically reduced the death rate from post-operative infections.
Lister's key tool was a compound called phenol, or carbolic acid. Applied to surgical instruments and wounds, it killed the bacteria that had been silently murdering patients in recovery wards for decades. The results were dramatic enough that Lister became one of the most celebrated figures in medicine, and his name became synonymous with cleanliness and germ-killing in the popular imagination.
In 1879, a St. Louis physician and businessman named Joseph Lawrence was working on his own antiseptic formula, inspired by Lister's work. Lawrence had been experimenting with various combinations of eucalyptol, menthol, thymol, and methyl salicylate — a blend that was effective at killing bacteria and had the significant advantage of not smelling like carbolic acid, which was notoriously harsh.
He named his formula in honor of Joseph Lister.
But What Was It Actually For?
Here's where the story gets complicated — and genuinely strange.
When Lawrence first began marketing Listerine in the 1880s, through a partnership with pharmacist Jordan Wheat Lambert, it was not sold as a mouthwash. It wasn't sold as a dental product at all.
It was sold to surgeons as a surgical antiseptic. It was sold to dentists as a treatment for gum disease. It was sold as a floor cleaner. It was sold as a cure for gonorrhea. It was marketed as a treatment for dandruff. For a period, it was even promoted as a refreshing addition to a bath.
The product worked reasonably well as an antiseptic across multiple applications, but it didn't have a clear, dominant use case. Lambert's company was profitable but not spectacular.
That changed in 1921, when the Lambert Pharmacal Company made a decision that would transform not just their product, but the entire landscape of American personal hygiene marketing.
They Invented a Problem Nobody Knew They Had
In 1921, the Lambert company's advertising team — led by two men named Milton Feasley and Gordon Seagrove — dug up an obscure medical term that had been sitting in a British medical journal since 1874. The word was "halitosis."
It simply meant bad breath. Doctors had used it occasionally as a clinical descriptor. It was not a concept that had penetrated everyday American life in any meaningful way. Bad breath was something that happened sometimes. People were occasionally aware of it. Nobody had told them it was a social catastrophe.
The Lambert campaign changed that. Beginning in 1921 and accelerating through the 1920s, Listerine advertisements painted bad breath as a secret social affliction — one that was destroying friendships, ending romances, and costing people jobs without their knowledge. The ads were famously anxiety-inducing. One showed a young woman who was "often a bridesmaid but never a bride," her romantic prospects quietly ruined by halitosis she didn't know she had. Another featured a man passed over for promotion, his career undermined not by his work but by his breath.
The campaign was, by any measure, one of the most effective pieces of advertising in American history. Listerine's revenues grew from roughly $115,000 in 1921 to more than $8 million by 1928. The company had not changed its product. It had changed how Americans thought about their own mouths.
The Funeral Home Connection
So where do the corpses come in?
The phenol-based antiseptic formulas that preceded Listerine and informed its development had significant use in the mortuary industry of the late nineteenth century. Embalming — the preservation of human remains — relied heavily on antiseptic compounds to slow decomposition, and the same chemical families that Lister had used in surgical wards were being applied, in modified forms, in funeral homes across America.
Chemists working on embalming solutions in the 1870s were, in effect, running parallel experiments to those happening in surgical medicine — testing which compounds killed bacteria most effectively and which could slow organic decay. Some of those compounds, slightly reformulated, turned out to have applications in living bodies as well as dead ones.
The line between preserving the dead and protecting the living was, chemically speaking, thinner than anyone had expected.
Lawrence's formula drew on this same tradition of antiseptic chemistry, and several of the compounds he used had histories in both medical and mortuary applications. The mouthwash in your bathroom cabinet is, in a very real chemical sense, a distant descendant of the science of embalming.
A Billion-Dollar Industry Built on Anxiety and Accident
Today, the global mouthwash market is worth somewhere north of seven billion dollars annually. Americans alone spend over a billion dollars a year on oral rinses. Listerine remains one of the category's dominant brands, more than 140 years after Joseph Lawrence first mixed his antiseptic formula in St. Louis.
The dental science has evolved. We now understand that certain antiseptic mouthwashes genuinely do reduce harmful bacteria, help prevent gum disease, and contribute to oral health in meaningful ways — though dentists will note that mouthwash is an adjunct to brushing and flossing, not a replacement.
But the origin story remains one of the more remarkable in the history of American consumer products. A compound developed partly in the context of preserving human remains, reformulated by a physician inspired by surgical antiseptic science, then transformed into a mass-market product through one of history's most audacious advertising campaigns.
It was made, in some sense, for the dead.
And then it became part of how the living start every single morning.
